Iha in A
Perfect Circle
Former
Pumpkins guitarist back on the road
Iha (former
Smashing Pumpkins guitarist) stepped in to replace original
guitarist Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails) of APC. "They
were looking for someone who had some experience and a similar
vibe musically," Iha said. "I really respect all
these guys as a band and I'm flattered that they asked me
to join them. I think it was between me and Yngwie Malmsteen.
They were looking for that high-speed metal thing, but they
settled for me." Iha does not appear on the group's upcoming
second album, The Thirteenth Step, and says he's only a touring
member of the band for now.
Phish
or future model of music distribution?
As the
phenomenal success of the jam titans' new online download
service at livephish.com
proves, bands don't necessarily need record labels anymore.
Livephish.com
allows band aficionados to download Phish shows within two
days of the concert getting three-plus hours of sound-board-based
music for the price of a CD--$9.95 for the MP3 format and
$12.95 for the higher-fidelity FLAC files.
Just posted
on the site are all the sets from Phish's summer tour-ending
It festival, which drew more than 70,000 people two weekends
ago to a remote Air Force base in Loring, Maine. In addition
to the actual shows, Live Phish is offering for free a copy
of the group's sound check and a late-night jam session atop
an air traffic control tower.
According
to Brad Serling, the founder of Nugs and the former chief
technology officer at CinemaNow, which offers video-on-demand
technology, Live Phish has been making major waves since its
debut, generating more than $1 million in revenue via several
hundred thousand successful downloads.
"I
think it works in a Phish world," Maureen Coakley, Elektra's
vice president of publicity, told AP. "Phish is so unique."
But
not alone. Other road warrior acts are plugged in, too, including
Pearl Jam, which offers exclusive MP3 versions of its latest
concerts at pearljambootlegs.com, the Who, the String Cheese
Incident and Ween. Clear Channel is also test-marketing its
own concert CD service, which would make several live acts
available, as are smaller sites like disclive.com and rockslide.com.
Pennsylvania
natives Mickey Melchiondo and Aaron Freeman, aka Dean and
Gene Ween, left Elektra years ago and now distribute tunes
from their Ween.com.
The site allows fans to download live recordings, tune in
to Webcasts and get previously unreleased tracks, like the
now infamous X-rated Pizza Hut jingle "Where'd the Cheese
Go?" The duo even set up a 24-hour Ween radio station.
In fact,
the group was able to make its new album, Quebec, which was
released by Sanctuary Records on Tuesday, by putting out live
recordings of their concerts on their Website.
"On
Elektra, our best-selling record sold 200,000 copies or more,"
Melchiondo told the New York Times this week. "But we
still owe all this money to the label. Then we sold just five
or 10,000 CDs through our Website and raised $100,000 to make
our new album."
Festival
Express
Eddie
Kramer who's promoting an upcoming four-CD box set of
unreleased Jimi Hendrix
Experience material, has announced nearing completion
of a long-planned documentary about the fabled 1970 "Festival
Express" tour of Canada -- which featured Janis Joplin,
The Grateful Dead, The Band and others.
Kramer,
whose producing resume includes Hendrix, The Beatles, Rolling
Stones, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, David Bowie and Eric Clapton,
said he was not at liberty to say who would be producing or
distributing the film.
The new
version of Hendrix's "Isle Of Wight" will likely
air on network TV in the U.S. before being released to DVD
home video.
The biggest
hint of what treasures the Hendrix vaults might yet reveal
comes with the soon-to-be-released four-CD set, titled simply
"The Jimi Hendrix Experience." In stores Sept. 15
and comprised of 56 tracks (most previously unreleased) recorded
onstage and in the studio, the set opens up whole new vistas
for Hendrix aficionados.
Maverick
signs Simons
Maverick Recordings announces the signing of Keaton
Simons. Danny Strick and Guy Oseary and Sandy Roberton
were instrumental in bringing what many are calling the singer/songwriter/performer
of the next several decades to Maverick, a true career artist
with untapped talent and multitude of avenues to explore.
Simons songwriting prowess and voice harkens back to
a time when Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and the true folk-singers
of the 70s spoke clearly and boldly with their music.
His guitar mastery has been hired by a wide diversity of artists
such as Snoop Dog and Trey from Pharcyde. As a 24-year-old
performer beyond his years, Simons melds all things John Mayer,
Dave Mathews with influences in the vein of Elivs Costello,
Tom Waits and Harry Connick, Jr. Simons

The
New Hospital
Gets an SSL
MT Plus
HD Television studio linked to a state-of-the art Audio
Control Room
Founded
by American investor Paul G. Allen and under the creative
direction of musician and filmmaker Dave
Stewart of the Eurythmics, The Hospital is based in the
former St. Paul's hospital in Covent Garden, close to many
of the UK's top post-production and independent film and TV
production companies. The 60,000-square-foot facility will
feature a full range of facilities designed to allow all kinds
of creative projects to be completed, including Europe's first
high-definition television studio.
A new
facility for music, art and film professionals, Hospital is
incorporating two Solid State Logic digital consoles into
the first phase of its unique studio plans. Chip Treverton,
director/CEO of The Hospital project team in London, says:
"The Hospital had several criteria to meet the demands
of music based video capture space - fast automated reset,
the ability to make changes to complex set-ups to support
multiple live acts or scene changes quickly, integration and
resource sharing between the 2 control rooms, reliability
and service/support, and a large number of inputs on a smaller
and familiar work surface. We looked at all the major players
and decided that the MT Plus was the only desk that met all
of our requirements, and we're pleased to be working with
SSL to deliver these for future clients."

Hans Zimmer Masters "Pirates" at Cups
'N Strings
Pictured

Academy
Award-winning scoring composer Hans Zimmer recently mastered
at Santa Monica's Cups 'N Strings Studios the soundtrack albums
for "Pirates of the Caribbean," (score produced
by Hans Zimmer, composed by Klaus Badelt) starring Johnny
Depp, and "Tears Of The Sun," (score by Zimmer)
starring Bruce Willis, just released on DVD.
"These
were our first projects with Bruce and I was very pleased
with the results," commented Zimmer. "I would like
Bruce to take care of all of our projects, so I think we'll
keep him very busy."
"It's
a very delicate process," explained Bruce Maddocks, studio
owner and chief engineer. "Hans selects the individual
music cues from the film which are sequenced with crossfades
to build a very long, very lush musical presentation. You
have one very large piece of music and the challenge is to
create an album in the mastering stage with all of the individual
elements blending seamlessly. The trick is to find a balance
so that everything fits together to make a very smooth sounding
package."

King Fogel Steps Up
If you've been to the movies in the last year or so, you have
no doubt been lovingly surrounded by none other than Chris
Fogel and his larger than life 5.1. Having mixed the score
and score album for Universal's "Johnny English, recorded
and mixed the scores for "Dreamworks' "Old School,"
Spyglass' "Reign of Fire," Miramax's "A View
From The Top" and Columbia's "The Sweetest Thing,"
it is no surprise that he has stepped up to the producer chair.
Musically speaking, that is. He produced, recorded and mixed
the amazing score for "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle"
as well as New Line's forthcoming "Laws Of Attraction"
and "Win A Date With Ted Hamilton." His next undertaking
will be "Skeleton Key."
Fogel
is famous for mixing the likes of Alanis Morissette, Aerosmith,
Robbie Robertson and Sheryl Crow amongst many others. You
can hear his mixes on Samantha Ronson's forthcoming Rocafella
album produced by Duncan Sheik. contact Shannon O'Shea (323)

A Jingles
Voice-over Studio from SCR!
Wayne Thomas
Yorke portrays the affable UPS employee/spokesperson who explains
the virtues of the new UPS/Mail Boxes Etc. operation - now
described as the world's largest retail shipping, postal and
business services franchise company. He has also appeared
in TV ads for Orkin Pest Control, Denny's and Liquid Plummer.
Wanting to branch out into the potentially lucrative voice-over
market, Yorke recently contracted Steven Klein SCR to design
and build a compact voice-over booth in his garage.
"They
were the perfect people for me. sThe project fell into place
and we completed the conversion in one week. It was an excellent
experience!" Yorke enthuses. He also worked with a local
equipment retailer, RSPE Audio Solutions, which supplied the
production equipment and ISDN unit, and Pat Schneider of P.S.
Tech, who set up and wired the entire system. Contact: Steven

Come
Fly With Me!
At O'Henry
Studios
Tierney
Sutton's upcoming CD, "Dancing in the Dark"
is a tribute to Frank Sinatra recorded at Conway Studios in
Hollywood for Telarc. Engineering tasks were handled by multiple
Grammy award-winner Michael Bishop.
"The idea was to have Tierney record a collection of
tunes that made Sinatra famous," says Bishop. "'Come
Fly With Me,' for example, is as well known for the Nelson
Riddle arrangement as it is for Sinatra's impeccable vocal.
Having a female vocalist sing these songs turns things around
right away. Another twist was the new arrangements by Tierney
and the band.
Bishop uses Neumann's
Solution-D software for the recordings. "It lets me send
control data over the same AES cable that the signal is coming
into the control room on using the system's AES 42 interface.
I can change a pickup pattern, or alter the sensitivity and
gain, and insert high-frequency and peak limiting without
ever leaving the control room! All of these functions are
controlled at the microphone itself. Add to that the openness
and the clarity of the microphone and you've got a fabulous
combination, which has become an invaluable tool for me,"
says Bishop.
Sacred
Love from Sting's Home!
The paradigm
shift in music recording that has taken place over the last
ten or more years, away from traditional studio facilities
and into home or temporary environments, has given rise to
a handful of high-end equipment rental specialists. Stephen
Jarvis Audio Consulting from Bay Area has amassed a large
rental inventory of gear that includes a sizeable quantity
of George Massenburg-designed GML equipment.
Jarvis
supplied a great number of GML
devices to engineer Nathaniel Kunkel of Studio Without Walls
for one of his recent remotes. To coincide with his first
studio album in four years, entitled "Sacred Love,"
Sting
filmed a performance' at the historic Mayan Theater in downtown
L.A. that will be released as a limited edition DVD-V package
promoting the CD, scheduled in stores September 23rd.
"I
recorded everything on stage through 36 channels of GML mic
pre," recounts Kunkel. "The three main vocals, Sting,
Joy and Mary J. Blige, were recorded entirely through GML
2020s." The GML 2020 High Resolution Discrete Input Channel
combines a mic preamp with filtering, equalization, and dynamics
processing in a two-rack space package.
Kunkel
is mixing the performance audio for the DVD release in 5.1
at Sting's Malibu home using his portable system. GML processing
is typically featured in all of his mixes, notes Kunkel. "I
use the same 2020s that I used tracking for my vocal inserts
in Pro Tools when I mix. I mix on a Sony DMX-R100, so I like
to take care of all of my inserts in Pro Tools, then at the
end of the mix I can easily print what that insert was. It
almost always is a GML 2020."

Abraham. Following their stint at NRG, Static-X found a new
drummer, Nick Oshiro, and can be seen this summer on tour
with Staind. The new CD Shadow Zone is set for
a September 2003 release.
