Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?

Last some heard Matric was from Williamsburg and signed to Restless. Somewhere in there they were a duo living in the U.K. who wound up with a cool tune in a Polaroid ad on television here in the USA.

Most recently they moved to LA from Toronto and recorded their debut full length album at Elgonix Labs with producer/composer Michael Andrews (Elgin Park, Donnie Darko, Gary Jules, DJ Greyboy)

The album was recorded in two months. The band dug into the vintage analog, Mike fueled their fire, and engineer Eddie Miller caught it all on tape. The result is the debut album by Metric, described by a friend on the inside as sounding like "The Cars fronted by a female Jean-Paul Sartre."

The Journey Within

Enter To Win A Signed Guitar, Baseball, Or Bat here!

Any baseball fan knows how Bernie Williams plays. The superstar New York Yankees center fielder has consistently flashed grace, passion, disciplined focus and a remarkably fluid sense of rhythm in feats both at the plate and in the field that have made him truly the heir in his role to no less than Hall of Famers Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle.

Now music fans will know the same qualities. The Journey Within, Williams' debut album, spotlights his impressive gifts as a guitarist and composer. Due July 15th from renowned GRP Records, it's a set of shimmering instrumentals - seven original Williams compositions plus versions of Billy Joel's "And So It Goes," Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" and Brazilian legend Baden Powell's "Samba Novo."

Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots

Flaming Lips
(Warner Brothers) have signed a new futures deal with Universal for the world ex-North America. One of the most innovative bands of modern times, their last two albums The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots have consistently appeared in critics\' end of year Top 10's.

The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne said, "Like a giant spaceship, we (The Flaming Lips) are once again encouraged to explore new and unknown artistic dimensions. We thank Paul Connolly for his goodwill, for it has made us more determined and self-assured."

Exploring The Soul

Some of Southern Africa's finest vocalists and instrumentalists, along with contemporary jazz icons from America, have come together on this ambitious collaboration. Under the guidance of Heads Up President Dave Love, Smooth Africa II: Exploring the Soul features such all-stars as Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Jimmy Dludlu, Spyro Gyra, Andy Narell, Prince Kupi, Gloria Bosman, Joe McBride, and 2003 South African Music Award winners; Shaluza Max and Moses Khumalo.

A visit to South Africa in 1998 with keyboardist McBride (the first American to ever perform at Cape Town's annual Jazzathon) provided Love with the initial inspiration to debut Smooth Africa. "I had fallen in love with the entire country, its people, its culture," says Love. "But mostly I was amazed by the talented local musicians who played with Joe, and felt they needed to be heard outside of South Africa."

Trumpet Evolution

The new album by Grammy and Emmy winning trumpet virtuoso Arturo Sandoval offers 19 tracks chosen personally by Sandoval in tribute to some of his favorite trumpet players - from early jazz pioneers such as King Oliver and Louis Armstrong, to his own mentor Dizzy Gillespie, Mexican composer Rafael Mendez, and classical players Timofei Dokschizer and Maurice Andre. Sandoval enlisted executive producer Quincy Jones to help steer the project, and he re-created each tune with the blessing of the original artists or their surviving family members.

" . . . My philosophy has always been that I love music. Period. I don't want to be remembered as a jazz trumpeter. I'd like to be remembered as a man who loved music. Because I like to play piano, I like to compose. I like to do all those things as much as I like to play the trumpet," says Sandoval.

One Step Forward
The new release by the Afropean Hip Hop/R&B duo Les Nubians
shares a connected feeling with people in Jamaica, Egypt, Cameroon, Chad, London and their native Paris.

Since their '99 U.S. debut Princesses Nubiennes became the most successful French-language album in more than a decade of Billboard charts.

One Step Forward was recorded in Jamaica, Cameroon, London and at home in Paris, where sisters and band mates Helene and Celia were joined by African Jazz legend Manu Dibango, pianist Ray Lema, Classical musician Benjamin Biolay, dancehall Reggae stars Morgan Heritage, UK Electronica wizard I.G. Culture, Mounir Belkhir, the poetic producer of the US hit track “Makeda” and more. For Les Nubians, these diverse sessions were a chance to work with some of their biggest influences, while bringing together the music of a wide range of cultures and generations.

The Anthem

A song for the so-called "losers" in every junior high and high school across America, the ones who are shunned and mocked for their appearance or their foreign background or their lack of money. Benji and Joel of Good Charlotte knew-and befriended-some of those kids, and now have given them what Benji calls "a song that would help them get through the day. It's a song that could help them say, 'hey, bring it on-it won't bother me because I don't wanna be like you.'"

Their last release, The Young and The Hopeless was recorded between Feb and May 2002. Good Charlotte worked with Eric Valentine (Third Eye Blind, Smashmouth, the Dwarves, and Queens of the Stone Age), who produced the album at his own Barefoot Studio in Hollywood, CA with a little help from friend/mixer/engineer Ken Allardyce.

Next To You

Meadows found inspiration for this album in the story of Lance Armstrong - a world-class athlete nearly struck down by cancer, only to recover and win the Tour de France in 1999.

After studying jazz with Anthony Truglia, Meadows attended Berklee College of Music, where he majored in arranging and composition. Meadows perfected his craft studying with Joe Henderson, Dave Liebman and Eddie Daniels. "Not long after I finished school, (well-known jazz drummer) Norman Connors recorded my song 'Invitation' and then asked me to join his band. I later produced his Passion album with him. Things just fell into place."

"The real magic for me happens in the studio when I put on those headphones and begin to play. That's where the ideas just start to flow. Everything else in my musical life comes out of that moment," says Meadows.

Taupin Art
Poetry On Canvas

Bernie Taupin and Elton John have enjoyed one of the most fruitful writing partnerships in pop music history. Taupin has been a major behind-the-scenes force known for his contribution on timeless hits, including: "Your Song," "Daniel," and "Candle in the Wind."
Fast forward 2003 and meet Taupin, the artist. This time he puts poetry on canvas. The simple yet universal ideas one can embrace and the passion conveyed in his works remain unchanged. studioexpresso is pleased to bring you Taupin Art.

L-R: Sunday in Atlantis; Bernie Taupin with American Burka

Much of Bernie Taupin's artwork can be viewed through many different lenses: be they clear, colored or cracked . . .At first one might be attracted by the sheer beauty or aesthetic of the piece . . Upon closer inspection one might sense the social and political commentary that lies beneath the layers of oil and acrylics. While he would be considered an Abstract Expressionist he is also exploring his own uncharted territory by creating mixed media pieces that include a variety of eclectic materials from barb wire, mannequins, 2 x 4's, bits of clothing to Wyoming license plates, padlocks and chicken wire. Using oil and acrylic to explore his heart and soul, Taupin paints as he writes, of evocative dreams and provocative nightmares, of love lost and love found.

Access Taupinart or Moondance Fine Arts Gallery in Los Angeles which solely features over 40 pieces of Bernie Taupin's artwork.

Saadiq's Pookie Entertainment
Release of a live album and launch of his new label

After years of reporting to major labels for his solo and Tony! Toni! Tone! albums, Raphael Saadiq is going to do things his way and start a new chapter in his musical life by opening the doors to his own company, Pookie Entertainment.

He'll be releasing his first-ever live album in October (exact date TBA) on his Pookie Entertainment record label and is currently in negotiations with a major distributor. It will be the first official Pookie Entertainment indie release since the critically acclaimed and Grammy® nominated self-titled album by Lucy Pearl (Raphael's post-TTT project with Dawn Robinson from En Vogue and Ali Shaheed Muhammad from A Tribe Called Quest), which came out May 2000 and was distributed by BMG.

Three special live performances of Raphael and his 12-piece band, along with many surprise guests, will be taped in front of fans and radio contest winners July 2 in San Diego at the Belly Up Tavern, July 3 in Los Angeles at the House of Blues and July 4 in Las Vegas at the House of Blues.
The performances will also be filmed for a forthcoming DVD, which will be released sometime next year via Pookie Entertainment.
Meanwhile, Raphael will release his second solo studio album in February 2004, which will be recorded at his Blakeslee Recording Studios in North Hollywood, CA.
All this excitement follows his "Best R&B Song" Grammy® Award win this past February for Erykah Badu's "Love Of My Life (Ode To Hip Hop)" from the "Brown Sugar" soundtrack. He racked up a total of five nominations, including "Best R&B Album" for the critically-acclaimed Instant Vintage, which was released May 21, 2002 on Universal Records.
Raphael was actually the first artist in Grammy® history to be nominated without having a major record label deal. He amicably parted ways with Universal in December 2002.

Since Raphael concluded promotion of the album in February, he's been keeping busy producing songs for upcoming albums by D'Angelo, Kelis, Nikka Costa, Snoop Dogg and many others.

In other news, Raphael's venturing into the A&R world of the music industry and is looking for soul, hip-hop and rap artists for his label. Copyrighted material only can be sent to: Pookie Entertainment, 4850 Vineland Ave., #241, North Hollywood, CA 91601.

UMG Announces New Venture with Tommy Mottola
Universal Motown Records to Distribute Casablanca Label

Mattola

Universal Music Group, the world’s leading music company, has entered into an exclusive venture with Thomas D. Mottola to launch Casablanca Records. The announcement was made on July 8th by Doug Morris, Chairman & CEO of Universal Music Group, Mel Lewitner, Chairman & CEO of Universal Motown Records Group, and Mr. Mottola.

"We are delighted to be in business with Tommy and his dynamic team at Casablanca," stated Mr. Morris. "For over a decade, he was the heart and soul of Sony’s creative success. Tommy brings to the company the same innovation and creativity that have been the hallmarks of everything he’s done in his storied career."

"I could not ask for a better partner than Doug; our close friendship began over twenty years ago, and I am thrilled to be working with him now. I am also looking forward to working with Mel, whom I respect greatly, and the entire Universal Motown Records team to grow Casablanca into a worldwide success," said Mottola.

"Tommy is a remarkably creative talent in his own right, who possesses the intuitive ability to build, strengthen and transform artists into powerful global brands," added Mr. Lewinter. "And under his leadership, we are confident that Casablanca will provide the kind of organic environment needed for artists to develop, while at the same time benefiting from Universal Motown’s unique support system."

As one of the most highly regarded and influential executives in the worldwide entertainment business, Mr. Mottola most recently served as Chairman and CEO Sony Music Entertainment. During his tenure, he transformed Sony into one of the most successful global music companies in history, expanding its businesses in over 60 countries, while creating one of the strongest management teams in the industry. Along the way, he developed and nurtured many of contemporary music’s top icons, from Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Gloria Estefan and Aerosmith, to Destiny’s Child, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Nas, the Dixie Chicks, Shakira and Marc Anthony, among many others.

A renowned trendsetter, Mottola has also been at the forefront of driving popular culture, creating a number of highly successful strategic co-branding initiatives, including superstar Celine Dion’s marketing partnership with Chrysler and an unprecedented and multifaceted global marketing campaign with Pepsi. Moreover, he revitalized Sony Music’s publishing division by securing the much sought after acquisition of Sony Tree and enabled Sony to become the first major music company to make available commercial digital downloads.

Mottola joined Sony (then CBS Records) in 1988 at age 37 as President of CBS Records, making him the youngest President in CBS history. A year later, after a restructuring of the company, he was named President of Sony Music. And in 1993, he was named Chairman and CEO of Sony Music Entertainment. Prior to joining CBS, Mr. Mottola was one of music’s most prominent artist managers, who successfully launched the careers of such chart-toppers as Hall & Oates, Carly Simon and John Mellencamp.

Most recently, Mr. Mottola branched out into television production when leading music channel VH-1 approached him about developing a reality based television program centered around his unprecedented track record for discovering, nurturing and transforming female artists into worldwide superstar divas. Serving as Executive Producer, Mr. Mottola and VH-1 debuted Born to Diva earlier this year and enjoyed immediate success. Detailing an intercontinental musical search for the next diva, the program quickly garnered critical acclaim and launched its own dedicated following of fans through thousands of pieces of mail and hundreds of web sites from around the world.

Known also for his many philanthropic activities, Mottola serves on the Board of Directors of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Police Athletic League, T.J. Martell Foundation for Cancer, Leukemia and AIDS Research, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation and Museum, and the Federal Law Enforcement Foundation.

Universal Music Group is the world’s leading music company with wholly-owned record operations or licensees in 71 countries around the world. The Strings Rock

In early March, violinist Eric Gorfain and his string quartet the Section visited New York City, to accompany pop princess Christina Aguilera while she performed her hit single "Beautiful" on Saturday Night Live. A few weeks later, the Section performed at a benefit concert in Los Angeles, the group's home base. The quartet again accompanied a chart-topping singer-in this case, pensive pianist Fiona Apple-and also performed a set that drew on its own repertoire: string arrangements of songs by the theatrical hard-rock band Kiss and art-rockers Radiohead, plus an orchestral arrangement of the classic-rock staple "Sunshine of Your Love.". Radio & Records Convention Report
Music, Wine & Whine?!

At R&R Convention this past month, held at Merv Griffin’s world-famous Beverly Hilton hotel, attendees were treated to three days (6/19-21) of solid learning sessions and topflight entertainment at the industry’s largest gathering of radio and record executives.

With the music industry in a deep trough, nearly every session at the convention touched on the various issues that plague the business these days
. One of the sponsor billboards read: "20 million people will download MP3 music this month. But, who's counting?" Mood was lighter at the "Rate-A-Record," "Rate-A-Wine" session sponsored by Verve Records. Do I need to explain? Broadcast Architecture provided the groovy electronic rating boxes. The panelists (comprised of A&R and DJ's) and the audience voted for their fave song and wine. Our pick: Artesa Vineyards, Napa Valley.
Def Jam and Island sponsored the alternative/rock gathering at the Roxy to discuss issues concerning the state of the two fomrats under the "Wine & Whine" title.

The buzz was HD Radio from the folks at IBiquity digital who claim:
AM digital will have FM-like audio quality
FM digital will have CD-like audio quality
Static-free and crystal clear reception
Wireless data services to include on-demand audio

IBiquity has licensed over 35 Broadcast Groups for Digital AM/FM Conversion across US. LA's public radio station KUSC 91.5 FM is one of many stations who has gone digital with HD.
For the first time, this year Latin radio and record execs were represented. Warner Music Latina presented a one-on-one interview with Julio Iglesias Jr.

R&R Industry Achievement Award ceremonies were held on Friday Eve and performances by Eve 6, Rumblefish, White Light Motorcade, Cauterize followed at the Roxy.

Last but not least, America's Mayor, Rudolph Giuliani was the keynote speaker. A determined leader who brought remarkable strength and stability at a time of great uncertainty in NY...offered the same passion and understanding to the R&R participants.

Go Rudy!

Iraq Today
Water Storage Over Radioactiv Threat

Children from Al Wadiyah carry home clean water barrels which Greenpeace activists exchanged for radioactive ones.

According to Greenpeace, locals in Iraq gathered radioactive barrels for water storage and despite Greenpeace efforts to collect the hazardous containers they've realized that "for many the immediate need for water storage over rides the unseen threat of radioactivity," said Mike Townsley of Greenpeace.
Two members of the Greenpeace team are maintaining a weblog diary of their mission to Iraq. You can review a history of the expedition to date and monitor live developments here

Farewell to an Icon
Barry White
September 12, 1944 - July 4, 2003

White wasn't just a seduction artist with a deep voice. Given the balancing act he pulled off, he was one of the great contortionists of modern times. As a singer, White evoked utter sincerity in wantin' your love B-A-D bad, baby, uh huh. But as an icon, he was also able to laugh at himself.

So he turned up in lots of odd places, serving as a romantic oracle to be channeled by aspiring Lotharios on everything from "The Simpsons" to "Ally McBeal." The MTV cartoon duo "Beavis & Butt-head" dubbed White "the horniest dude of all time." There was also the now-legendary "Late Night With David Letterman," appearance where White intoned a top-10 list of "Words That Are Romantic When Spoken by Barry White" - a list that included the words "Oprah," "gingivitis" and "Giuliani."

White's generosity of spirit extended to his activism on the south centeral LA streets where he grew up.

White pioneered the role of the plus-sized R&B balladeer, men who live large and love larger. While Luther Vandross, Gerald Levert and new "American Idol" champ Ruben Studdard fit that mold, too, they're just a shadow of the originator. And none of the rest can touch White's musical virtuosity.

After a massive run of success during the '70s, White struggled through the '80s before coming back with a vengeance in the '90s. His double-platinum 1994 album "The Icon Is Love" was one of the biggest hits of his career, triggering a critical reassessment that earned him a modicum of grudging respect. Recent years have brought further honors, including his belated first-ever Grammy Awards - for the aptly titled 1999 album "Staying Power."

Even though White himself is gone, his music won't be disappearing anytime soon. In fact, there's a brilliant bootleg called "The Theme I Love" at Soundhog a mashup that puts Eminem's staccato rap from "The Way I Am" over the swelling strings of White's 1973 instrumental "Love's Theme" (a song that launched a thousand golf tournament telecasts, and countless more romantic interludes).

There's an old saying that goes, if you ain't getting bootlegged, you ain't happenin'. Barry White was, is and always will be happenin'.
