Platinum (15), Gold (19) and Multi-platium (8) records.
He was awarded a
Grammy for recording and mixing Dianne Reeve's A Little Moonlight
( Best Jazz Vocal Album 2003).
Simply
put, most of us have heard the familiar sounds O'Reilly has captured.
Take the Prince song by Chaka
Kahn "I
Feel For You" or the legend of "Whitney
Houston"
which began with her self-titled album engineered by him.
Michael began
his career at New York's legendary Atlantic Records Recording Studios
as an assistant engineer where he honed his craft. He gained experience
working with a range of mega artists-- from The Rolling Stones,
Average White Band, George Carlin, James Taylor and Aretha Franklin
to Charles Mingus, to name a few.
Michael had
the distinguished honor to work alongside the legendary Producer,
Arif Mardin on virtually all of Arif's projects for the last 30
years. Michael was credited as producer on Bette Midler's album,
Bathhouse Betty and Associate Producer On Arif Mardin's, All My
Friends Are Here album due 2010.
As a recording
engineer, Michael has worked in a wide variety of musical genres
to include: Pop, Rock, R&B, Jazz, Blues, Broadway, Original
Film Soundtracks and Film and Television Scores. This makes Michael
at home recording weather it's a 60-piece orchestra or a single
blues guitar. He has worked with a roster of artists as diverse
as Whitney Houston, The Bee Gees, Bette Midler, David Bowie, Modern
Jazz Quartet, Smashing Pumpkins, Los Lonely Boys, Jewel, Queen Latifah,
Eric Clapton, Matisyahu, and The Radio City Rockettes, to name a
few.
Michael has
also been known to play an occasional guitar part on records that
he has worked on (Jewel, Bette, Roberta Flack, Chaka Kahn). Film
Soundtrack and Cast Album sampler: "Against All Odds",
the single with Phil Collins, Disney's "Hunchback of Notre
Dame" and "For the Boys" (Bette Midler), Rent ( Cast
Album ) , Smokey Joes Café ( Cast Album) "Someday We'll
All Be Free" ( Aretha Franklin) from motion picture, "Malcolm
X", "The Eyes of a Child" with Michael McDonald from
the soundtrack, "South Park, The Movie-Bigger, Longer &
Uncut."
Current
Credits:
More recently Michael has partnered in a new
studio owned by Angelo Montrone called Majestic Music Factory
in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.
"The studio was built to accommodate the new reality of the
music business. I'm able to meet the new budget limitations and
still maintain high audio standards," says O'Reilly.
The
studio is a Pro Tools/Ampex multi-track room built around classic
vintage and modern analog gear where he recently completed mixing
two independent albums. "The studio set up is versatile enough
to accommodate the artist's needs, whether it's sending in their
files to be mixed remotely, or being able to track a full band,
live," he adds.
Michael has
also entered the world of broadcast television with music mixing
for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and lending a hand over
at Saturday Night Live. "Today you simply have to diversify
and build several skill sets. You never know from which industry
or from what part of the globe your next job may come," Michael
says who's just about to start mixing a documentary film on the
life of legendary producer Arif Mardin. "I'm working on the
project with Arif's son, Joe Mardin. I consider myself extraordinarily
fortunate to have had such a long and fruitful relationship with
Arif as his engineer, and his friend," Michael says. The album
was recorded shortly after Arif's passing, comprised of Arif's original
compositions featuring many of the artists he'd worked with over
the course of his career -- Nora Jones, Bette Midler, Dianne Reeves,
Carly Simon, Phil Collins, Hall and Oates, The Average White Band,
The Rascals, Danny O'Keefe, and more. "It was a labor of love
for all involved. The album will be released with the film in 2010,"
says O'Reilly.
