London-born and LA-based engineer and mixer Jess Sutcliffe is a 3-time Grammy winner. His numerous nominations include: Best Engineered Album for ...., Sutcliffe has worked in a multitude of genres, with diverse and iconic artists such as Prince, The Rolling Stones, Sheila E., Toto, Agnetha Fältskog (ABBA), Eagles, Luis Miguel, Carlene Carter, Willie Nelson, LeAnn Rimes, Boz Scaggs, Sam Moore, The Fall, The Saints, Chelsea, Meat Loaf, Gavin Rossdale (Bush), Rob Thomas, Aretha Franklin, and Diana Ross.
Sutcliffe began his career in 1979 at Matrix Studios in London, and by 1980 had scored his first #1 album with Gary Numan’s Telekon (having mixed four tracks and recorded two others on the album), as well as Numan’s two #1 singles from the same period. He spent the next few years recording and mixing punk rock in the UK, Europe, and Los Angeles, where he recorded and mixed LA cult band Wall of Voodoo’s album Call of the West (featuring the hit Mexican Radio).
In 1983, he changed course again to become the engineer for Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire-composer, Vangelis. Together they worked internationally on projects to include, film, records, and TV, in London, Paris, Athens, Rome, Milan, New York, and L.A. Sutcliffe also recorded and mixed two ballets composed and performed by Vangelis for the Royal Ballet Company. Jess Sutcliffe moved to Los Angeles when he met his wife Shari in 1986. Shari was managing Cherokee Studios then, and familiar to many producers for her production coordination career.
In 2024 Sheila E released her new salsa album, Bailar, mixed by Sutcliffe. The Album features special Guests, Rubén Blades, Gloria Estefan, Luis Enrique, Debi Nova, Pete Escovedo.
Sutcliffe primarily works at his private studio, The Viscount, in Thousand Oaks, CA, and still dreams of being a pro on the PGA tour!
